In 1994 two bike and ski junkies saw a missing niche in the Boulder bike scene: a business committed to high-end service for mountain sports enthusiasts. Sports Garage was born in the quanset huts at the corner of 27th and Spruce, the former home of a motorcycle garage and machine shop. The founders installed DIY bike service stands and a tuning machine, and continued to pursue their passions for mountain biking and skiing. It did not take long for the SG vibe to attract a like-minded mtb crowd, and soon ski tuning dissolved and the mountain and gravel bike retail operation began. A 1996 model year mountain bike was the first bike ever sold at Sports Garage. Twenty three years after our founding, Sports Garage remains one of the most highly respected mountain and gravel bike retailers in the industry.
Choose Our Gravel Road Bikes
As a premier retailer of mountain bikes, gravel bikes, accessories, and services for all bike riders, from the new and casual rider to the dedicated, die hard bike riding enthusiast, Sports Garage takes its role seriously. Our first and top priority remains true to our original purpose of 23 years ago: to feed our adventures with the best products and services available. Many cycling genres have been represented in the huts over the years, but the spirit of our founders has never been more present than during the last year, during which Sports Garage committed to being Boulder’s only exclusively dirt cycling shop: where the pavement ends, our passion begins.
The Rise of Gravel Bikes
When SG began gravel bikes and road bikes were not discussed with such clearly discernable terms: in Boulder the difference mainly lie in where the rider decided to go! Though not explicitly referred to as gravel bikes, the machines ridden on Roubaix courses around the world were, in fact, gravel bikes, even if only by necessity. And the men and women that rode them were adventuresome and tough road bikers. The gravel bikes sold at Sports Garage today clearly descend from those off-road road bikes with literally centuries of tradition. Today, however, gravel bikes are among the fastest growing and most diverse bikes in the marketplace. If Colorado and California can both legitimately claim the birthplace of mountain biking, than the Midwest is the birthplace of today’s gravel bikes. With a relative lack of the elevation profiles and trails that appeal to give rise to mountain biking, adventure seekers from Kansas to Ohio and beyond turned to long journeys and tough races on endless miles of gravel roads. The bikes they rode evolved, just as mountain bike technology adapted to the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. With geometries, drive trains, wheels, and tires optimized for long days in the saddle, gravel bikes now share a set of “specs” that are distinct from their road bike brethren.

Welcome to Our Gravel Bikes Community
We are growing a gravel bikes community that draws riders from all cycling genres. Cyclocloss racers who want to go further than the racecourse are turning to gravel bikes. Road cyclists intimidated by distracted drivers and crowded roads are turning to gravel bikes. Mountain bikers looking for off-season adventure or training are turning to gravel bikes. Sports Garage brings them all together in the spring for a series of non-competitive community building rides called the Gravelanche Series. We provide title sponsorship for events that favor gravel bikes, such as Old Man Winter and the Gold Rush Rally.
Our gravel bikes community is a natural extension of the Sports Garage vibe that our founders nurtured in a shop where off-road adventure lovers would receive the highest level of sales and service. Join us on the dirt road!
