AKA:  Clemcake, Clemsicle, Joey, Clem, Hucker Joe

What do you do at Sports Garage?

I serve as a vehicle that transports dreams to reality.  Well, in other words, I am the guy that will help you find the right bike.

What is your favorite bike that you’ve ever had?

It was the bike that started it all… a classy Schwinn Moab 2.  That machine took me into a whole different world I had never seen before - the world of sweat, mud and blood.  I would still have that bike today if it didn’t get stolen.  Bummer.

History/Background in Cycling?

Well, it did all start with that glorious Schwinn Moab.  That was 12 years ago.  A couple years after acquiring that fun machine, I found out that there were bikes specifically meant to go down hills.  Uh-oh.  On came big travel bikes and Marzocchi Monster T forks.  In college, I ran the UMass Bike Racing Team for a couple of years with my partner in crime, Jeremy Durrin.  With the influential help of finances and Jeremy, I got off of a big bike and started dabbling in different disciplines of bike racing – road races, crits, circuits, cross-country and now cyclocross.  I guess you could say I get around on a bike.

What’s the best thing about SG?

SG does things different – we are based out of a Quonset hut, we have infinite bicycle related wisdom (it’s true, just talk to Zack) and more customer service than you can shake a stick at (a big stick).  It’s true.  From personal experience I can say that we take what we do here serious… and with a lot of pride.  SG is comprised of a unique group of people that are all passionate about bikes.  In my opinion, SG should be running for President.  Then everyone would be on a bike…

Why/how did you start work at SG?

One could say I was lost at sea.  I was looking for a job after spending a winter in Crested Butte.  I stumbled upon SG while visiting some family in Boulder.  I didn’t want to leave I liked it so much…so I didn’t.

Why do you ride?

There are so many disciplines; no matter what kind of person you are or what kind of mood you are in, there is always a bike for you.  Do I need to abuse myself today, taste my stomach and sauté on the frying pan we like to call tarmac?  Road biking it is.  Or maybe I’m feeling cocky with a need for speed.  Well, in that case, I may as well hop on an ol’ downhill rig and charge into some rock gardens.  I challenge you to tell me there is no bike out there that would plaster a smile on your face.  SG will find it.

Joe is what you might call a “sleeper.”  He’s a total bad*** on a bike but would never tell you that.  He makes bikes go really, really fast.  He also eats unusual food, wears orange shoes, and has an impressive collection of interestingly patterned sweaters.  When he’s not pointing people towards their next dream bike, he’s racing his bike to podiums all around Colorado.  Like friendly, knowledgeable, experts?  Joe’s your guy.
